The Adventurous Side of Sacramento. Yolo Brewing

San Francisco may be my #bigcitycrush, but that doesn't necessarily mean I don't have a fondness for the big city right across the causeway from Davis, Sacramento. Yes, #SacTown isn't exactly as big or as popular as #SanFran, but I think it's grossly underestimated.

For one, Sac has become the foci of a new, burgeoning contemporary art scene comprised of artists focusing in mediums anywhere from digital art (case in point Broadway Augmented) to open house style performance art (thank you Verge).

Second, because of its proximity to Sacramento Valley agriculture and the new hype over local, organic, small farming , Sacramento has begun to see the rebirth of a new food culture.

Okay, so it's not food per say, but the point remains, Yolo Brewing Co. encapsulates the best qualities of Sac with the indie appeal of craft quality more at home in the Bay Area. Their pride in the craft beer is apparent not only through the variety of well-cultivated brews on rotation at their brewing hub, the number of clients already showcasing their brews across (and beyond) the Sac area, but also in the employees' sincere passion and knowledge about the brews and company coupled with the lively atmosphere created by the patrons and beer enthusiasts present.

My experience Sunday was a bit more playful than what I expected.

Sure there were beer flights.

And chatty brew masters and bartenders, plus even chattier clientele.

But trivia?

Jenga?

Yes, a large aspect of our afternoon at Yolo Brewing Co. was indeed occupied with driving through two flights of the ten brews available, but not without a touch of entertainment. Both Chey and I tried our hands at a game of trivia (+1990s T.V not a good choice) and many rounds of Jenga. A huge bonus was the footprint of previous Yolo Brew visitors present in the spattering of trivia and truth-or-dare questions tattooed across many of the Jenga pieces (we also couldn't help ourselves from adding to the collection of questions.) and even better, many of the patrons around us were more than excited to join us in our diversions.

My only regret about our visit was the lack of foresight to book a personal brewing session. That's right; you can craft your own brew, and it's incredibly affordable for the quality and quantity you receive. Then again, that's just an excuse to plan a bigger and badder excursion to the other side of Davis to revisit the hole-in-the-wall dive that is Yolo Brewing Co. I suggest the Valentale.

Cheers!
